The cost is $1,650 and the petition will go before the Marion County Board of Zoning Appeals. He said citizens in Trader’s Point and elsewhere can appeal the permits 60 days after they are stamped. “My constituents believe there is no need for gas station there.”ĭepartment of Code Enforcement spokesman Dimitri Keyser said none of the 21 permits have yet been approved. “Do you really want a business where they don’t want you?” he said. If someone wants to invest money they should not be deterred.”Ĭity-County Councilman Jose Evans, who represents the district, said he is all for free enterprise but in this case, the enterprise isn’t welcome. “For a lot of people convenience stores are where they go to get grocery staples like milk. “Let’s let the marketplace decide where the stores should go,” Imus said. Scott Imus, executive director of the Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association, said the zoning change was “unfair.” “You don’t become a criminal just because someone builds a gas station next door.” “If a neighborhood is nice like this one, you don’t expect criminals to show up,” he said. It was unfair to assume that crime would come with the gas station, Singh added. Singh said the gas station would not be open 24-hours and the other mall outlets, possibly a barbershop and restaurant, would benefit the neighborhood. “I live two miles away and I plan to send my 2-year-old daughter to Fishback Creek.” “The school and the playground and where children get off buses doesn’t face the property,” he said. The property would have a retention pond and the gas tanks would be built in accordance with city and state law, with safeguards to protect against spilling if something did go wrong. Singh said the gas station would be 1,000 feet from the creek and would be connected to the same sewer lines as the school. They (residents) had all this time to do something about it why didn’t they do anything for 30 years?” said Singh, owner of Three Mile Properties. “It has been zoned like this for 30 years. Gurpreet Singh, the owner of the proposed strip mall, called the objections “baseless” and said he has met every city requirement. “As a parent our job is to protect our children and when you put a strip mall across the street from a school that puts them in danger,” she said. 86th St., where her third-grade daughter and fifth-grade son are enrolled. Fishback Creek Elementary is across the street from the site at 8301 W. Stephanie Leavell, a mother with four school-age children said she’s concerned the Traders Point gas station would be a threat to their safety. If approved, they would push the number of gas stations in C-3 zones from about 80 to more than 100. “There’s a lot of activity all the time around them now.”Īfter learning of the impending change, builders lined up to file 21 new applications in March and April. like they were four decades ago when these zoning classifications were written,” said John Bartholomew, a spokesman for the city’s Department of Metropolitan Development. “These aren’t just a garage with a mechanic that closes at 5 p.m. They now must be built in areas with heavier industry because of the traffic and noise they attract and lighting they need around the clock. The zones generally permit light retail such as clothing and beauty shops, and office services such as Kinko’s near residential neighborhoods.īut a task force that recently overhauled the county’s 40-year-old zoning code determined that the C-3 designation was outdated for mini-mart gas stations, many of which stay open all night. The City-County Council passed an ordinance April 20 by a 26-0 vote that placed a moratorium on gas stations in areas zoned for small businesses, called C-3s. “But no commercial has been placed here in 30 years and it just doesn‘t reflect the pattern of development,” said Helsel, a property appraiser. Residents contend the gas station isn’t needed because there are 30 in a 5-mile radius of the location. Helsel said residents are concerned that the tanks could leak into Fishback Creek, which feeds Eagle Creek Reservoir, the drinking water for 500,000 residents. “There is a huge environmental concern because a creek that flows right into a reservoir is right by that property,” said Michael Helsel, a resident near a proposed strip mall, gas station and convenience store at 8562 Layfayette Road in Traders Point. In a furious dash to beat a looming deadline, developers filed 21 applications to build new gas stations across Indianapolis before a zoning change became law last month.Ĭity officials said all or most of the last-minute applications should be approved if they meet the basic standards of the old zoning code.īut in one Northwest side neighborhood, residents are continuing to fight a permit, asserting it is a threat to drinking water and their children’s safety.

Three instances of Braveheart getting something right for a change. I know we’re talking about the difference of a few inches, but believe me, it matters. Early 14th-century necklines tended to be higher and less rounded, coming almost to the collar bone. You have a deep “U” shaped neckline on Jessica Brown Findlay and a completely off-the-shoulders look for Katie McGrath, who plays her evil sister (and which is actually period for a very specific area of the 14th century, but that’s a post for another day). Take these examples from Kate Mosse’s Labyrinth (2012): Not period: If memory serves, this modern “medieval” gown by Butterick calls for something like 10 yards of fabric, which is INSANE overkill when it comes to fabric consumption.Īlmost all of Sophie Marceau’s gowns in Braveheart show a higher neckline than what is considered “sexy” for modern eyes. In reality, the prevailing belief is that medieval gowns were fitted by techniques such as pulling the fabric to mold to the body, without the wastefulness of fabric that inserting curved seams requires. The reality is that they are a modern conceit that you see often in films set in the medieval period because, hey, they’re easy and result in something that looks to the modern eye like the right look. The bottom line is that princess seams are not historically accurate for the 14th century. And no, princess seams are not the same thing as the seaming treatment found in some bog clothing finds dating to the 14th-century). There’s some quibbling about whether or not that’s really where the term came from, but at any rate, princess seams are not medieval (except for one possible depiction in that one portrait of Agnes Sorel where she has her boob out. It’s a patterning technique that allows for a tight fit over the curves of the body without resorting to using darts or folds.Īllegedly, the term “princess seam” dates to the late-19th-century, ostensibly named after Princess Alexandra of Denmark, daughter-in-law to Queen Victoria, who had a lithe figure and preferred to wear gowns that fit snugly to show it off to best effect. Most of you won’t need a description of what princess seams are, but just in case there’s a few of our readers who aren’t up to speed on sewing terminology, princess seams are seams that start either at the shoulder or the front of the armpit and run over the bust. There is a point after the 14th century where wimples get rolled into widow’s weeds and nuns’ habits, but during the period that Braveheart is set in, they were high fashion for young women, to the point where laws were imposed on prostitutes to prevent them from wearing wimples and being confused for ladies of good breeding - and you know that if the whores were wearing it, it had to be fashionable. I have waxed poetic on the subject of wimples in the past, but one thing usually stands out about them as a costuming choice for film, and that’s that they’re almost always worn by older women. Heck, even finding veils in films is hard. So, I’m here to talk about it.Īsk yourself, when was the last time you saw a film or TV show set in the 14th century that depicted any young, beautiful woman wearing a wimple? I’ve seen at most a handful of modern films set in the 14th century depicting women in wimples, but they’re usually left off in favor of hair flowing free in beachy waves. Panne velvet aside, Braveheart actually gets a couple things right about medieval women’s clothing that the vast majority of films and television shows set in the same era constantly fuck up. I’ve thought a lot about this movie over the last 20-whatever years, and while the vast majority of it has been wondering who’s idea it was to match Mel Gibson’s woad face paint to his eye color and pondering the finer points of crushed panne velvet (is it ok because it’s pretty? Or is it still a crime against nature?), but recently something has occurred to me that I feel needs to be pointed out: I have something good to say about Braveheart (1995), and no, I’m not running a fever, nor have I been kidnapped by aliens and replaced with a cybernetic version of me that is programmed to say nice things about Mel Gibson movies. Sanchez said she was lucky enough to be able to sit down with her children as they went through lessons to help because she works part-time from home.Įdgenuity is used by school districts across the nation. Moreover, she said teachers didn't follow up with their students about what they learned because the entire lesson and assignment was built into the program. She said the app is educational and has informative lessons, but for her younger children, it was dull. "They dreaded it," she said of all of her kids. Sanchez said her son in high school would postpone anything that had to do with Edgenuity, an online curriculum software for K-12 students, because it was going to take him a long time to get through it. Sonia Sanchez, who has three children in LAUSD schools, said an app called Newsela, which helps students with reading comprehension using news articles, was particularly helpful and enjoyable for her kids.īut, she added, Edgenuity was just the opposite. Hontz said the district spending on devices and hotspots was essential. And we were only able to help a limited number of parents with our resources," she said, adding that the group had no funding for this. "We walked parents through that step by step, but the district did not put many resources toward tech proficiency training. They did this because many low-income parents had never accessed the technology before and in many cases didn't speak English, causing huge barriers to navigating the technology, SpeakUP spokesperson Jenny Hontz said. Parent advocacy organization SpeakUp stepped in and conducted training for parents on how to use Zoom and other tech. There remain questions about how the district determined which apps to purchase, including whether teachers, parents and students were involved in the decision-making and whether the district provided professional development to help teachers navigate these apps.īut several parents said they were left on their own to help their kids with their assignments at home using these tools. The agents helped families learn how to use tech and virtual apps. And resources were available for parents, including a hotline established to provide consultations with live agents. The spokesperson said professional development for the apps was offered to teachers. The apps were also evaluated to determine whether they met California's curriculum standards and student data privacy policies. However, there needs to be a transparent process in place," said Tim Green, a professor of educational technology at California State University Fullerton.Īn LAUSD spokesperson said the district sought input from teachers and administrators, surveying more than 11,000 people to determine which apps were being used and preferred by educators. "As an educational technologist, I am in favor of resources being spent on technology. But experts said in the speed in which the process took place what was often left unanswered was how the district chose educational apps. The district has not responded to inquiries from dot.LA about their process. One parent group gave its own training for parents to help their children connect to their online classes. While many of the edtech apps the district purchased helped students learn, some parents said others were boring and caused frustration. Included in that is $23.4 million in spending on several licenses for edtech apps like Edgenuity, Discovery, Rosetta Stone, Blackboard and Edpuzzle. More than half was spent on tech like laptops, tablets and hotspots and a lab to process COVID tests. Records obtained by dot.LA show the district spent $390 million in emergency funds for its COVID response from March 2020 to April 2021. Some were age inappropriate, being used for elementary age students who had a hard time navigating them.ĭot.LA spoke with a half a dozen parents and teachers about the district's effort to build thousands of virtual classrooms across the sprawling district. Parents complained of edtech apps that were hard to hear in some cases or ones that were so cumbersome their children avoided them altogether. In the sprint to remake education during the pandemic, Los Angeles Unified School District armed half a million students with internet and devices to stay connected, but experts and parents said that its efforts to teach online sometimes fell short and left students behind. Economic stability relies on fiscal sustainability – and the Autumn Statement sets out the government’s plan to ensure that national debt falls as a proportion of the economy over the medium term. The government’s priorities are stability, growth and public services. These factors have contributed to a significant gap opening between the funds the government receives in revenue and its spending. Debt interest spending is now expected to reach a record £120.4 billion this year. This comes against a backdrop of higher levels of government debt due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and current energy crisis. Growth is slowing and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects a third of the global economy to fall into recession this year or next. Central banks are raising interest rates to get inflation under control, which has pushed up the cost of borrowing for families, businesses and governments. Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine has contributed to a surge in energy prices, driving high inflation across the world. Honeycomb is a strong structure, even if it's more expensive the survivability increase is worth it.The Autumn Statement 2022 comes at a time of significant economic challenge for the UK and global economy. I hope that the new Autumn-class ships carry on the Halcyon-class legacy of Honeycomb shapes. So the survivability of the Pillar of Autumn was aided by her unique design, like the MV Joyita in real life. While flooded to an extent which would sink a conventional vessel, Joyita stayed afloat due to her cork-lined hull and cargo of fuel drums. In addition, further buoyancy was provided by a cargo of empty fuel drums. This reminded me of an old Earth ship, a ghost ship.įitted out for carrying refrigerated cargo, Joyita had 640 cubic feet (18 m3) of cork lining her holds, making her virtually unsinkable. The internal bracing structure allowed the ship to function even after sustaining critical levels of damage. Pillar of Autumn and 10 others out of 50 were built with this type of superstructure. This led to the design being dropped from future models of Halcyon-class ships. The internal superstructure of Pillar of Autumn was designed by Doctor Robert McLees, though it was deemed unnecessarily over-massed and costly due to a series of cross-bracings and interstitial honeycombs.
