![]() Economic stability relies on fiscal sustainability – and the Autumn Statement sets out the government’s plan to ensure that national debt falls as a proportion of the economy over the medium term. The government’s priorities are stability, growth and public services. These factors have contributed to a significant gap opening between the funds the government receives in revenue and its spending. Debt interest spending is now expected to reach a record £120.4 billion this year. This comes against a backdrop of higher levels of government debt due to the economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and current energy crisis. Growth is slowing and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) expects a third of the global economy to fall into recession this year or next. Central banks are raising interest rates to get inflation under control, which has pushed up the cost of borrowing for families, businesses and governments. Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine has contributed to a surge in energy prices, driving high inflation across the world. Honeycomb is a strong structure, even if it's more expensive the survivability increase is worth it.The Autumn Statement 2022 comes at a time of significant economic challenge for the UK and global economy. I hope that the new Autumn-class ships carry on the Halcyon-class legacy of Honeycomb shapes. So the survivability of the Pillar of Autumn was aided by her unique design, like the MV Joyita in real life. ![]() While flooded to an extent which would sink a conventional vessel, Joyita stayed afloat due to her cork-lined hull and cargo of fuel drums. In addition, further buoyancy was provided by a cargo of empty fuel drums. ![]() This reminded me of an old Earth ship, a ghost ship.įitted out for carrying refrigerated cargo, Joyita had 640 cubic feet (18 m3) of cork lining her holds, making her virtually unsinkable. The internal bracing structure allowed the ship to function even after sustaining critical levels of damage. Pillar of Autumn and 10 others out of 50 were built with this type of superstructure. This led to the design being dropped from future models of Halcyon-class ships. The internal superstructure of Pillar of Autumn was designed by Doctor Robert McLees, though it was deemed unnecessarily over-massed and costly due to a series of cross-bracings and interstitial honeycombs.
